As the population ages, the need for well-designed senior living spaces becomes increasingly important. Creating environments that cater to the physical and emotional well-being of elderly individuals is crucial. At The Shape Interiors, we recently had the privilege of working with Waseem Hassan to transform a senior living space into one that promotes independence, comfort, and style. In this blog, we’ll share the design tips and strategies we used to create a space that meets the needs of seniors while maintaining a modern, elegant aesthetic.
Our goal for this project was to design a space that not only addresses the physical limitations of aging but also promotes a sense of independence and dignity. Senior living spaces should be comfortable, functional, and tailored to the unique needs of their occupants. Our challenge was to balance these considerations with aesthetics, ensuring that the design remained inviting and beautiful while offering ease of use and accessibility.
For this senior living space, we selected a modern, minimalist style with subtle touches of warmth. The design focuses on clean lines, simple yet sophisticated furniture, and a neutral color palette with accents of natural textures. This style ensures that the space feels open, calm, and spacious—important factors for seniors who may feel confined or overwhelmed by clutter. We incorporated soft tones of beige, light wood finishes, and soothing hues to evoke a sense of tranquility and relaxation.
The layout and zoning of a senior living space are crucial for safety and functionality. We strategically divided the space into distinct zones that encourage ease of movement while providing areas for relaxation, dining, and activities. The furniture layout is designed to allow for wide, unobstructed pathways that accommodate wheelchairs and walking aids. The open-plan living and dining areas flow seamlessly, ensuring that residents can easily transition from one activity to the next.
For the material selection, we focused on durability and ease of maintenance. The floors are finished with non-slip materials to prevent accidents, while the furniture is made from high-quality, low-maintenance materials. We also incorporated textures that add warmth and comfort—soft fabrics for cushions and rugs, as well as natural wood for furniture and finishes. These textures not only contribute to the aesthetic of the space but also create a tactile experience that adds comfort for seniors.
Lighting plays a critical role in any design, but it is especially important for senior living spaces. Proper lighting can help mitigate vision issues often experienced by seniors and improve the overall ambiance. We used a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Overhead lighting is bright and even, while task lighting is placed strategically for reading, cooking, and other activities. We also incorporated LED lighting under cabinets and in hallways to provide gentle, guiding light during nighttime hours.
In senior living design, it’s important to select furniture and décor that are both functional and stylish. We chose ergonomic furniture that is comfortable and easy to use, with adjustable features where necessary. For example, recliners with easy-to-use controls and beds that are at an optimal height for seniors. We also paid close attention to storage solutions, incorporating easy-to-reach shelves and drawers that can be organized to reduce clutter and improve functionality. The décor reflects the peaceful, modern theme of the space, with carefully chosen artwork and accessories that evoke a sense of calm without overwhelming the senses.
When designing a senior living space, accessibility is paramount. We ensured that every aspect of the design is senior-friendly, from raised toilet seats in the bathrooms to grab bars and handrails throughout the space. The layout is designed to accommodate mobility aids like walkers and wheelchairs, ensuring that residents can move about freely and safely. Additionally, we focused on minimizing tripping hazards and ensuring that the space is easy to maintain, with low-maintenance surfaces and furniture.
