Medical centres are often associated with sterile, impersonal environments. But at The Shape Interiors, we believe that healthcare spaces can—and should—be deeply comforting. When Dr. Murtaza Gova of Specialist Medical Centre (SMC) approached us, his vision was clear: he wanted to create a clinic that felt less like a hospital and more like home. This project offered the opportunity to reimagine medical interiors through a patient-centric, emotionally intelligent lens.
The primary challenge in this project was to balance the clinical functionality of a medical space with the emotional warmth of a home. Our design team focused on creating an atmosphere that would soothe patients upon arrival, reduce anxiety, and instill trust. This required a rethinking of traditional clinic layouts and finishes to integrate hospitality-inspired design elements within a functional healthcare setting.
We selected a theme anchored in minimal modernity, infused with elements of warmth. Earthy neutrals, soft greys, and warm wood accents set the tone for the interiors, complemented by muted green plants and carefully curated artwork. These choices helped eliminate the cold, sterile feel often associated with clinics, replacing it with something inviting and human-centered.
Careful spatial planning was critical. We crafted distinct yet cohesive zones for reception, consultation, diagnostics, and private offices. Each area was designed for optimal flow and function, ensuring patient privacy while also maximising operational efficiency. Strategic zoning not only helped in wayfinding but also contributed to a sense of calm throughout the clinic.
Materials were thoughtfully selected to strike the perfect balance between hygiene, durability, and visual warmth. We used anti-bacterial laminates and high-grade vinyl flooring for easy maintenance, while soft textiles and acoustic panels brought in tactile comfort. The colour palette leaned toward warm beiges, off-whites, and calming blues to enhance relaxation and reduce patient stress.
Lighting played a crucial role in setting the ambiance. We layered ambient lighting with focused task lighting and soft accent lighting to ensure each space served its function without overwhelming the senses. Dimmable lighting in waiting and consultation areas helped create a sense of intimacy and calm, enhancing the “home away from home” feeling.
From plush armchairs in the waiting area to sleek yet comfortable consultation furniture, every element was chosen with patient comfort in mind. Modular cabinetry ensured functional flexibility, while curated décor pieces—like indoor plants and calming artwork—added a personal touch. The end result was a clinic that invites patients to relax, not just wait.
Every design choice served a dual purpose: aesthetics and utility. Hidden storage units, easy-clean surfaces, and ergonomic layouts ensured staff could perform efficiently while maintaining the overall visual integrity of the space. Functional considerations never compromised the design—rather, they elevated it.
