Designing for senior living is an art of empathy. At The Shape Interiors, we believe that every phase of life deserves a space that uplifts, protects, and inspires. Our recently completed project for Waseem Hassan is a testament to this philosophy—a graceful blend of accessibility and elegance tailored for the comfort and dignity of senior residents. This thoughtfully curated space redefines what it means to age in place with style.
The primary design challenge in this project was to create an environment that would offer uncompromised safety while maintaining an air of refinement. From the outset, our goal was clear: to make everyday living intuitive and secure for elderly occupants, without resorting to a sterile or overly clinical look. Every element—from layout to finishes—was selected to support mobility and ease, all while radiating a sense of calm sophistication.
We embraced a soft, serene design language for this home, rooted in minimalism but rich in warmth. The chosen theme harmonized muted pastel tones, organic textures, and gentle curves to promote tranquility. The aesthetic leaned heavily on biophilic principles, allowing nature to seep in through warm wood tones, calming green accents, and ample natural light—creating a restful retreat for mind and body alike.
Navigating the home needed to be effortless. Our team reimagined the layout to eliminate barriers and allow free flow from one zone to another. Wider doorways, a clear circulation path, and slip-resistant flooring created a safe movement experience. We designated private, restful areas and more interactive, social spaces with deliberate zoning—ensuring the design catered both to solitude and family interactions.
Materials and surfaces were selected with both safety and comfort in mind. Anti-skid tiles, rounded-edge furniture, and soft, hypoallergenic textiles reduced the risk of accidents while elevating the sensory experience. The color palette leaned on soothing neutrals, dusty blues, and sage greens—tones known to promote relaxation, emotional wellbeing, and spatial harmony.
Lighting was an especially critical element. We implemented a multi-layered strategy combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, all controlled with smart switches for ease of access. Gentle LED strips along the floorboards, softly diffused pendant lights, and natural daylight optimization ensured visibility without harsh glare—tailored to the visual sensitivities of senior eyes.
The furniture selected was deliberately low-height, with supportive armrests and firm cushioning for ease of seating and standing. We integrated built-in storage within arm’s reach and minimized bending or overhead lifting. Every piece balanced function and form—contributing to a visually refined yet practically empowered environment.
Waseem Hassan envisioned a space that his elderly family members would feel proud of—one that respected their needs without making them feel limited. From the handcrafted artefacts to the calming artwork and curated corners for prayer, reflection, or reading, the space celebrates life’s golden years with dignity.
